Section: H1
Task: CDS
Camilla, TJ, Dave:
Last Thursday 26th June 2025 alog85373 I restarted the HWS camera control code. We hoped this would improve the 2Hz noise comb in DARM. Initial results for F-Scan (observing) suggest it has not made much, if any difference.
Attached F-Scans show the spectra on sun22jun2025 and mon30jun2025. The 2Hz comb (blue squares) look unchanged.
More investigation is needed to verfiy we are indeed disabling the frame aquisition on all HWS cameras when H1 is in observation.
WP12649 Add h1ascimc WFS_B_DC chans to DAQ
Elenna, Dave:
A new h1ascimc model was installed which adds two 16kHz versions of the WFS_B_DC channels to the DAQ. The new channels are
H1:IMC-WFS_B_DC_[PIT,YAW]_OUT_16K_DQ
A DAQ restart was required.
WP12635 VACSTAT HAM1 update
Dave:
A new H1EPICS_VACSTAT.ini was generated. This removes the temporary H1-PT100B VACSTAT gauge and adds the new HAM1 PT100_MOD2 gauge to the DAQ. After the EDC+DAQ restart, VACSTAT was restarted sans H1-PT100B now it is longer needed by EDC.
WP12637 HWS Camera Control
Dave
As part of getting the HWS camera control system running again, its new IOC was added to the EDC via H1EPICS_HWSCAMCTRL.ini. EDC+DAQ restart was needed
DAQ Restart
Dave, Jonathan, Erik
DAQ was restarted for four changes:
1) New H1ASCIMC.ini, adding two new fast DQ channels.
2) New H1EPICS_VACSTAT.ini, removing obsolete VACSTAT chans associated with H1-PT100B
3) Removed H1EPICS_VACHAM1.ini, which was trending the temporary H1 version ot PT100B
4) Added new H1EPICS_HWSCAMCTRL, new HWS camera control's IOC non-string channels.
This was a very messy restart.
After restarting the h1ascimc model, the 0-leg was restarted. A second restart of GDS0 was needed.
After writing two full frames, FW0 crashed and restarted itself.
Once FW0 was back, the 1-leg was restarted. GDS1 needed a second restart.
About 10 minutes later, FW0 had a second crash. This is not unheard of, but very rare.
In the course of investigating it was discovered that FW1 had an unused 1TB Seagate HDD (sda) which has been generating errors over the past month. We decided to remove this from h1daqfw1 since it served no purpose.
Following the DAQ restart, item 2) removal means I can stop running the temporary EPICS IOC vac_ham1_pressure_converter_ioc. This code no longer runs on opslogin0 in a tmux session.
WP12651 Replace h1seih23 IO Chassis +24VDC power supply
Fil, Marc, Erik, Dave:
h1seih23 was fenced and powered down. The IO Chassis was then powered down and its +24VDC supply was replaced (bad fan bearing). System was powered back up with no issues.

We noticed a failed drive on h1daqfw1. As we were in maintenance we powered down the system and removed the disk. This was a 1TB spinning disk. It was most likely put in to allow us to have large storage if we needed to write frames locally and then move then over the network, this was a very real posibility at point. However we never ended up doing that.
The system was taken down at around 13:38 local time.
WP 12613. ALOG: 84928. "Remove the cabling described in https://alog.ligo-wa.caltech.edu/aLOG/index.php?callRep=84928 from h1brsey and the network switch. Use the video port on h1brsey currently occupied by that cabling to connect to the kvm in the rack instead. Jim noted that "It might have been some sort of kvm or display extension set up Carlos tried for me. The rdp for beckhoff had too much lag to rebalance the BRS, so we had looked at some more direct remote display options, but I don't remember the details." and "the remote adjuster just installed means we don't need it, if that is what it is." Work to be done during any target of opportunity." This work has been completed.
WP 12641. "Install git and clone the vacuum repos on the vacuum machines where it has not yet been done. Update the scripts used to copy the channel lists from each of the Beckhoff vacuum machines to CDS to additionally copy the EPICS database files. Run the scripts on each of the vacuum machines. No expected downtime or impacts." I have completed the work on h0vaclx, h0vacly and h0vacmr and copied the auto generated EPICS IOC database files over. These did not need git to be installed. I did not do the remaining machines since I do not believe they are running out of the git repos and I was getting nervous. A couple of small issues. On h0vaclx I accidentally committed the change to the copy script before pulling changes from the remote repo. On h0vacmr more changes came down in the pull from the remote repo than I was expecting. h0vaclx: $ git pull remote: Enumerating objects: 15, done. remote: Counting objects: 100% (7/7), done. remote: Compressing objects: 100% (5/5), done. remote: Total 15 (delta 2), reused 2 (delta 2), pack-reused 8 (from 1) Unpacking objects: 100% (15/15), 3.90 KiB | 124.00 KiB/s, done. Workstations updated and rebooted. This was an os-packages update. Conda packages were not updated.
The h1daqnds0 system stopped accepting connections on its main nds1 port (8088). We restarted the rts-nds and rts-daqd services around 2:59pm localtime.
There were no log messages or dmesg output.
Upgrading Pylon on h1digivideo[4,5,6] has fixed the problem whereby camera processes continued to open files until they eventually reached the OS num_files limit and the camera crashed (new files were opened each time connection to the camera was restored, old files were not cleaned up).
Since the upgrade Tuesday 24 June 2025 the number of files open per process has remained static. Details in FRS, this ticket has been closed.
WP12637 Install HWS Camera Controls
TJ, Camilla, Dave:
I made a slight change to my original Dec 2023 hws_camera_control.py code to use the python epics module to do the cagets directly, and to also use this to add caputs which will try, in a non-blocking way, to send the camera's status to a central EPICS IOC.
The central IOC code is hws_camera_status_ioc.py which runs on cdsioc1 under puppet control.
The camera control code runs every minute in an infinite loop. Each loop it checks the status of H1 using Guardian ISC_LOCK (greater or equal to 600 denotes H1 LOCK). If H1 is locked and the camera is on, it turns the camera off. If H1 is not locked and the camera is off, it turns the camera on.
A mini-overview of the 4 HWS cameras (ITMX, ITMY, ETMX, ETMY) is available on the CDS Overview screen. The block is divided into 4 segments, each camera is shown either in SKYBLUE (camera is enabled, images are being taken) or GREEN (camera is disabled, no noise being created).
Note that the color scheme relates to what is nominal for OBSERVE. Green indicates the cameras have power, but their frame acquisition has been disabled.
Clicking on the HWS block on the CDS Overview opens a detailed screen (see attachment). For each camera this shows if the camera is powered (ETMY is the only one powered down) and if the camera is enabled. The control code also reports its current time, its uptime, its start time and details of where and how it is running.
Second attachment shows the four tmux sessions running the control code, and the arguments used.
MEDM
Confusingly we have been running with two separate copies of the vacuum overview MEDM.
CDS_OVERVIEW has been using /ligo/lho/h0/ve/medm/beckhoff/H0_VAC_SITE_OVERVIEW_CUSTOM.adl (not under any version control)
SITEMAP has been using /opt/rtcds/userapps/release/vacuum/h0/medm/Target/H0_VAC_SITE_OVERVIEW_CUSTOM.adl (under git version control)
It is the second one, which is git controlled, which should be used. I took the opportunity when fixing the MEDMs to remove use of the /ligo files and move CDS_OVERVIEW over to using the Target file.
Changes made to the site overview and committed to git (see attachment) are:
RED - HAM1 now only shows the new PT100_MOD2 gauge
YELLOW - IP24,IP25 have new names
PURPLE - text to show the local git working directory and git repo information
VACSTAT
I added the new HAM1 PT100_MOD2 gauge to VACSTAT last night. Initially I also removed the temporary H1 PT100B gauge, but then remembered this has channels in H1EPICS_VACSTAT.ini which caused EDC disconnects.
So for now VACSTAT has the new H0 PT100_MOD2 (not in DAQ) and the old H1 PT100B (in DAQ, but needs to be removed)
Trip levels were returned to pre-vent values.
Following the restart of any vacuum Beckhoff controller it is necessary to burt-restore the settings back to what they were prior to the restart (e.g. CP PID settings). We are using the slow controls Vacuum SDF to display which settings need to be restored, but the SDF cannot do the revert itself since it runs on a non-authorized server (h1ecatmon0) which does not have write access to the vacuum system.
Previously I had written a script in user vacuum's home directory on zotvac0 to do this restore for h0vaclx, today I made the script generic, taking the system to be restored as an argument.
The restoration process following a restart of a vacuum system is now:
On any CDS workstation open the vacuum SDF window showing the differences list, we will use this to verifty the restore worked correctly
As user vacuum on zotvac0 (restricted access to vacuum team, CDS and OPS) run the ./burt_restore_vac.bsh script with no arguments to get the usage:
vacuum@zotvac0:~$ ./burt_restore_vac.bsh
Incorrect arguments given
Usage:
burt_restore_vac.bsh SYS
where SYS is one of:
lx ly ex ey mx my mr
This morning I ran the script with argument = ly which correctly restored the h0vacly settings to those in h1vacuumsdf's safe.snap file***
***
unfortunately a late morning change to reduce CP1's LLCV value from 37.4% to 29.0% in preparation for today's dewar fill did not make it to the h1vacuumsdf_safe.snap file and so the burt restore restored the 37.4% value. This was caught in a few hours by CP1's TCs dropping below -110C and its discharge line pressure rising to 0.3PSIG.
WP12623 h1asc add fast channels to DAQ
Elenna, Dave:
A new h1asc model was rev-locked and installed. Four new fast DQ channels were added to the DAQ (channel, rate):
> H1:ASC-DC6_P_IN1_DQ, 256
> H1:ASC-DC6_P_OUT_DQ, 512
> H1:ASC-DC6_Y_IN1_DQ, 256
> H1:ASC-DC6_Y_OUT_DQ, 512
DAQ restart needed.
WP12570 Restart Digivideo Cameras with latest pylon
Patrick, Jonathan, Dave:
Jonathan updated pylon on h1digivideo[4,5,6] and restarted all the camera servers on these machines. This should fix the bug of stuck open files accumulating when the camera connection is interrupted.
No DAQ restart needed.
Add PID SMOO channels to vacuum SDF
Dave:
Prior to today's h0vacly restart I added the missing CP PID-control SMOO channels to the vacuum SDF monitor.req and safe.snap files. SDF was restarted 08:29. No DAQ restart needed.
WP12577, 12608, 12615 Upgrade LY Vacuum Controls
Janos, Gerardo, Patrick, Jonathan, Erik, Dave:
Patrick installed a new h0vacly system this morning. Main items are:
Pleae see Patrick's alog for details.
A extended DAQ restart was required, renaming Ion Pump raw minute trend files for uninterrupted lookback and construcing new PT100 (HAM1) raw minute trends following the upgrade of h0vaclx last Tuesday (17th June 2025).
DAQ Restart
Jonathan, Erik, Patrick, Dave:
Immediately following the restart of h1asc at 11:52, the DAQ was restarted using the following procedure:
It was at this late point that I remembered that the temporary H1 version of PT100B is no longer needed, and indeed this channel has no data following the removal of the PT100B Volts channel from h0vacly. However since it is still in the EDC, we need to continue running the temporary IOC until the next DAQ restart. I've removed it from edcumaster.txt as a reminder.
GPS Leap Seconds Updates
Jonathan, Erik, Dave:
Erik's FAMIS task reminded us that the leapseonds files expiration date of 30 June 2025 is rapidly approaching. Although no leap seconds are to be applied, the files need to be updated to reset their expiration dates. Please see Erik and Jonathan's alog for more details.
DNS testing
Erik:
ns1 (backup DNS server) was used by Erik to see if we can reproduce the error whereby loss of connection to GC caused internal CDS name resolution issues. It did not.

I went down to end Y to retrieve the usb stick that I remotely copied the c:\slowcontrols directory on h1brsey to, and also to try to connect h1brsey to the kvm switch in the rack. I eventually realized that what I thought was a vga port on the back of h1brsey was probably not, and instead I found this odd seeming wiring connected from what I am guessing is a hdmi or dvi port on the back of h1brsey, to some kind of converter device, then to a usb port on a network switch. I'm not sure what this is about, so I am attaching pictures.
