The terminator package has been installed on the Ubuntu workstations, including opslogin. This package is particularly useful if you are logging in remotely using X forwarding, as it presents a terminal window that can be split vertically and horizontally multiple times, with a new shell in each window.  Execute "terminator" at the command line, use the right mouse button to split the display.
