(Corey, Keita)
Here are notes from today's install of an optic:
- Went to Optics Lab & removed First Contact (FC) off back surface of our best high reflector & took it out to HAM5
- Moved cabled-up HAM5 Tip Tilt (TT) assy to convenient location on HAM5 so it could be worked on.
- Removed front EQ stops.
- Removed dummy optic from HAM5 Tip Tilt (dummy optic was used to balance the Optic Holder).
- At this point, I noticed that this dummy optic was a 1/2" thick optic (vs 3/8" I was installing). Talked with TJ & Keita about this. Keita said we would need to re-hang our 3/8" optic. This would require an alignment laser (grabbed one which was used for IO work).
- Removed TT from its vertical spacer so we could use our alignment laser.
- Removed FC from front surface of mirror.
- Noticed that the optic was pitching up.
- Around this time it was also noticed that the Left (looking from front) Spring Assy was visibly yawed. Keita loosened all (4) base screws for this to fix the yaw misalignment via the slop in the holes.
- Used the Balancing Set Screw (bottom of Optic Holder) to fix the balance/pitch of the 3/8" optic (it was pitched up). At some point when handling the Optic Holder, all of a sudden the mirror was pitched up a large amount (!).
- Able to pitch mirror down via the Balancing Set Screw, but not enough. So needed more mass for balancing (i.e. a bolt with a head on it & a nut).
- Also noticed that there was no Locking Screw for the Balancing Set Screw. I stole one of these 2-56 screws from the other TT TJ had in the optics lab.
- Actually, found this screw on the table as I was cleaning up at the end of the day! Need to reinstall on the TT TJ is currently working on.
- Used new Balancing Screw + Nut to balance the TT & this worked well, but when holding the Optic Holder to lock the Balancing Screw in place, we noticed the optic was pitched UP again!! At this point, Keita handled the Optic Holder an "opposite" way & managed to pitch mirror down. This was very dubious. We are suspecting something was wrong with the wire, or wire clamp.
- While investigating, Keita found the Right Spring Assy had 2 (of 4) base screws loose. He tightened them.
- Keita also tightened the Base Clamp screws on either side of the Optic Holder.
- Then he balanced the optic via the Balancing Screw (nut was removed since we didn't need that mass).
- The Locking Screw locked the Balancing screw in place (this time pitch was maintained...possibly due to less handling of the Optic Holder?).
- We were happy with this rough Balancing of the Tip Tilt (Koji would do final & fine adjustments when he arrives later). Thus COMPLETING THIS TASK!
- Front EQ stops re-installed, TT reinstalled on its vertical spacer, & alignment laser removed.
NOTE: This Tip Tilt is free-swinging & the First Contact is removed.
