More work on H1 alignment, noise in DARM

Varun, Sheila, Georgia, Craig, Cao, Robert

Alignment:

Noise in DARM:

Once we had the ASC engaged, we had no difficulty wiith moving to the nominal state (other than the violin mode).  However, we say very bad noise in DARM.

Other things today:

ADS limiters were added to limit the control signal when there's a huge glitch. This caused a lockloss at around 21 PDT today (Oct 26).
Another large glitch happened just now, and the limiters worked, preventing a large deviation from nominal alignment.

The excess noise in DARM was eliminated once the phase camera was blocked.

  • We opened the PRC2 loop (which uses POP_X, in air on ISCT1, as a sensor), and closed the POP beam diverter, and saw the jitter peaks at 200-300Hz as well as the excess low frequency noise disappear (purple trace in first attachment). We could only have PRC2 off for !5 mins before an ASC oscillation started to ring up. The beam divered was closed from 04:36:30 UTC to 04:52:55 UTC.
  • Then Cao went to ISCT1 and tried turning off the phase camera reference beam. This removed some of the jitter peaks but made some others worse (teal trace in first attachment).
  • We then went to SQZT6 and borrowed a spare beam dump, and put this in phase camera beam path, as indicated in the second attachment.
  • We don't know where specifically on the phase camera path the backscattered light is coming from.

While the interferometer has been locked (and perhaps exacerbated while Cao and I were walking past HAMs 1 & 2) we have seen occaisional large scattering shelves which also show up in the auxiliary length degrees of freedom FOM, from 5Hz to 50Hz.

The low frequency DARM noise also changed with IM3 yaw alignment.

  • Sheila mentioned the low frequency DARM noise was improved when she moved IM3 back to the pre-Monday alignment (gray trace in third attachment)
  • We in the next lock we added at 35 Hz line to IM3 yaw and slowly (so the rest of the ASC could keep up) steered it to reduce that line in DARM (yellow and red traces in third attachment), we perhaps could have pushed it further than the counts listed there
  • We had to put IM3 back at its original pointing to reacquire lock (i.e. it is now back at 4870 cnts) but perhaps it would be good to steer it to reduce the line again, and then re-do initial alignment in the next lock so IM4 compensates
  • We haven't looked at IM3 pitch or IM2. Maybe we're close to clipping something on the input path though, which could also explain the nasty scattering shelves?
