OPLEV charge measurements on ETMX and ETMY

This morning the IFO was down due to PSL issues, hence we got a window of opportunity to take charge measurements on the ETMX and ETMY. Attached below are the results for the same.

ETMY: There is a slight increase in the effective bias voltage for all 3 quadrant for the pitch (breached 50V for the 2nd quadrant). However for the Yaw the bias voltages are within permissible limits and there has been a slight decline.

ETMX: Overall, the bias voltage has been less than 50V, except for the 1st quadrant for the pitch and yaw which are at +50V.

DHARD OLG Measurement

After the IFO came back after the laser chiller fix, we used the opportunity to make DHARD OLG measurmenets at 2W of laser power input with the IFO beam spots centered and IFO beam spots moved to nominal configuration. The measurement template is committed to the svn at the following location:

Pcal EX End Station Calibration (12/10)

Today we went to EX to perform a standard end station calibration. Attached are the calibration procedure and a photo of the beam alignment on the Rx integrating sphere. The alignment looks similar to the photo in the previous EX calibration alog (51921, photo also attached). Analysis of the measurement will be added to this shortly, once some Python/Latex issues are resolved.

UIM Dynamics Filter ready for adding to Tagged models, in order to be usable by the Calibration group

I have finally fitted the UIM dynamics that we measured in the run-up to my previous aLog. The ZPK file I have produced will be propagated through the tagged suspension models as an update of the UIM dynamics that had been coded in there previously. This will result in the generation of a number of extra tagged models to aid in making the needed foton filters and for analysis in pyDARM.

The fit is done on data generated after the response model of the UIM is removed from the initial data, hence the data can be directly interpreted as the difference from the current model.

The fit (2019-11-20_H1SUSETMX_L1_AllMeas_vs_Fit.pdf) is far from perfect after 200 Hz, and is largely representative from that point on. Above 500 Hz, there is reason the suspect that the TF continues to go up (i.e. we are not sitting on a 1/f^6 slope), but obtaining data there is difficult. I have this fit roll off to a flat level, such that I do not create enormous discrepancies at higher frequencies. The idea is that I can just slap this on top of the current mode without doing anything revolutionary.

Going forward I'll be making new tagged models and propagating my change through to tagged models and to a new foton filter for the L1 stage in the H1CALCS filterbank.

DAQ restart for h1omc change (add two 16kHz channels)

WP8487 Adding NCALEX slow channels to DAQ

I created a new H1EPICS_NCALEX.ini file and added it to the EDC. During the DAQ restart I also restarted h1edc, whose channel count increased from 40,722 to 40,778.

The "new omc model" is the same, functionally, as the model that has been used before, just now with two new additional channels -- H1:LSC-DARM1_IN2 and H1:LSC-DARM1_EXC -- stored in the frames at 16 kHz. This is to facilitate studies of the time dependence of the DARM loop open loop gain, loop suppression, and closed loop gain, namely that we can post-process transfer functions during excitations offline instead of relying on DTT (i.e. what we wanted to do yesterday: LHO aLOG 53824).

This installation is now complete, and closes the work permit and ECR / IIET for LHO.

Attached is a screen shot of the model with the new DARM1_IN2 and DARM1_EXC channels added. Also, as a bonus, I removed all of the vestigial asterisks, "*", from the end of the channel names in the list. That used to indicate the differentiation between "science" (stored forever) and "commissioning" (stored for a month or two) frames, but that distinction is no longer needed, as all channels in the frames are stored forever.

@DetChar -- the DARM1_EXC channel will be zero during all times of OBSERVATION READY data, but H1:LSC-DARM1_IN2_DQ will essentially be a copy of the various forms of "H1:LSC-DARM_ERR_DQ," and thus will contain gravitational waves and is an "unsafe" channel to use for vetos. I let you know just in case you have a regular scrub for all channels in the frames, and rely on a human created list of "unsafe" channels to exclude them from blind, brute force, statistical studies.

Violin mode damping: notify settings

This morning we made some changes to the Guardian Python code for the violin mode damping settings (with respect to notify window, please see alog 53776). This window was blinking when any manual intervention was being made.

The IFO is currently unlocked due to PSL issues, hence to test our changes we ran the code in the IDLE state. We applied some gain for one (or two) of the modes and the notify window successfully notified without blinking.

The next step is to see how this works when the IFO is locked (while being in Damping_on_DC).

Later in the afternoon when the IFO was locked, Jenne and I tested the new settings (in the Guardian python code) by applying a very small gain to one of the modes. And the notify window immediately popped up and stayed there without blinking. Once the old values were restored, the notification was off.

PSL Status: PSL Diode Chiller Leak Keeping H1 Offline Until Morning

Walked in to see Cheryl & Jason on the phone & our PSL down (since 11:20pm local time).  As I got the hand-off from Cheryl, Jason had me log in a PSL computer (on ops station, opened a terminal and used vncviewer).  On the h1pslctrl0 desktop we could see that the Diode Chiller was OFF.  We toggled it ON, but it would immediately turn off.  One possible reason for this could be water level, so Jason had me go to the PSL Chiller room to check things.

Puddle Of Water Below PSL Chiller Discovered/Inspected (12:27-1:12am local time)

Upon entering the PSL Chiller room, I saw a puddle of water on the floor underneath the PSL chiller rack (see photo 1 & 2); the door ended up sloshing the little puddle when I opened it.  I looked at the Diode chiller (the one on bottom) and on its panel we had a RED Error light & the following notes:  (1) Flow Sensor 1 Error & (2) Low Level warning (see photos 3 & 4).

I tried to inspect (photos 6&7) the Diode Chiller to see where exactly this water was coming from, but it was hard to determine.  The panels on both sides of the chiller are removed, so one can somewhat easily inspect the innards of the chillers.  There did not appear to be any active leaking.  I looked at as many plumbing connections as possible, and did not observe any areas which looked visibly wet and a source for the leak (but there is the possibility this puddle could have been there for while and the culprit could have dried up to a point to hide its guilt!  The Diode resevoir has water in it (see photo #5)...in other words, it's not empty...but it's probably at a "low level" as indicated on the front panel.

At this point, I came back to let Jason know.  He stated this is a serious enough failure that multiple PSL staff would be needed to address the issue.  

Notified Keita (who is also the scheduled LHO Site Advocate) of the situation (also sent text to Jeff J & TJ).  Jason sent an email to JeffB to have him prep a spare chiller for a swap in the morning so they could get started first thing.  Asked Jason if the Diode Chiller was in a safe state as it is for the night and he said it should be.  

I contacted LLO & Virgo operators to asses them of our status.

Status Summary:

H1 is DOWN until the PSL Chiller can be brought back online.  The plan is for the PSL team to address this issue first thing in the morning.

Lockloss with loss of light on the PSL

Near the end of my shift, H1 lost lock,  with a message about the PMC High Voltage.  I found the Diode Chiller was offit, and the NPRO power clearly shows that it's now off.

The only guardian error message was PMC High Voltage is OFF.

After talking to Jason, I went to the CER and looked at the PSL power supply(s).

Power supplies look OK, so it appears that the guardian error message may be a result of losing the chilller.

Attached are pictures of 3 the 3 PSL power supplies.

I'm dropping in a comment on these 2 earthquakes on Dec 6 (UTC) because riding through them helped LHO make the 113 hour record. After the fact, the USGS rated these

as a M6.0 at 13:04:46 UTC and M5.7 at 15:42:44 UTC, each at depth of 10 km (since it is shallow it makes more surface waves) and each about 170 km NW of Tonga (near Fiji). The peak vertical surface wave velocities were 'only' about 1 and 0.7 microns/sec. Big enough to be a problem, but well within the 'ride-through' range for the EQ mode.

The detector stayed in Observing mode for both. The range was not effected much, although you can see some scattering.

LHO should brag about this as one of many things done to set the new record. Nice work.

Fig 1 shows the USGS page for the events.

Fig 2-4 are the DetChar summaries for peak ground velocity, detector range, and normalized h(t) spectrogram.

Fig 5 is an overlay of Figures 2 and 4, showing the extra noise at 20 Hz is correlated with the quake.

(I've updated the figures to turn off the 'alpha' channel exported by the DetChar summary pages. This transparency was making it hard to read)
