H1 ISI CPS Sensor Noise Spectra Weekly, FAMIS 12876

I ran the scripts for this FAMIS task on Dec. 2, while the site was still experiencing high useism.  The xterm window did not produce a list of any sensors being over threshold, and by eye it looks like there might be some sensors on BS that had (or have) elevated noise.

I also noticed peaks at around 6.9Hz, 7.6Hz, and 8.0Hz that were not in the spectra from Nov. 18th, in ITMY, HAM5, and HAM6.

In all attachments with two side-by-side plots, the current spectra is on the left, and the spectra on the right is from alog 53315, Nov. 18th.

I checked the current spectra against the Nov. 25th plots, alog 53473, and the changes noted above are new since those spectra.

Ops Mid Shift Report

I have been unable to find a combination of phases and gains to reliably damp these modes. I took a very fine BW measurement of them and it looks like our bandpass filter for mode 18 is 2mHz off (BP centered around 1000.294Hz, actual 1000.296Hz), but I can't imagine this is large enough to stop any damping.

The only time I have been able to damp mode 18, it was only at a rate of around 0.1 /sec and it largely broadened the RMS values for mode 20. Actually it seems to show up in the DARM BLRMS and other 2nd order violins with a period of ~88sec.

I'm currently leaving the two modes without any gains, where everything is stagnant, while I find some other potential solution.

It seems that the gain setting for ETMY mode 20 with a gain of 1 was potentially ringing up these modes slowly over the last day (see 2nd attachment). This gain setting is not in the guardian, so the node didn't have catch it.

thomas.shaffer@LIGO.ORG - 13:59, Sunday 08 December 2019 (53749)

I took us out of observing for about 45 minutes because the violin grd wouldn't let me change some of the mode gains on ETMY. I tried to see if some of the other modes that were somewhat close could be stopping us from damping 18 & 20, but that didn't seem to matter. I then tried to change which dof we actuate on. No luck there either.

Out of Observing from 2110-2155 UTC

cheryl.vorvick@LIGO.ORG - 18:47, Sunday 08 December 2019 (53750)

ETMY modes 18 and 20 are effected by ETMY mode 12 damping, which should be held at a max of something like gain = 2 (I think that's right, but should be checked by looking in lscparams, since I left notes about the nominal and max gain for mode 12.

If mode 12 gain is greater than what's called out in my notes, mode 12 gain is drving modes 18 and 20 to increase, and mode 12 gain should be reduced.  It's also possible that what worked for ETMY mode 12 gain last week is not working this week, since we just started damping this mode, so it's possible mode 12 gain should max out at a number lower than what my notes say.

Bottom line, modes 18 and 20 ringing up could be that they rung up, or it could be that mode 12 has too much gain.

cheryl.vorvick@LIGO.ORG - 18:58, Sunday 08 December 2019 (53751)

... also, I took a very prliminary look at damping ETMY modes 18 and 20, and tested the values as found in their filter banks with low gain values, and there was no clear setting for gains that damped either peak, and some settings that clearly caused an increase.  lscparams values for these mode gains were set to 0, both nominal and max gain, and it might be worth checking what they're set to now.

thomas.shaffer@LIGO.ORG - 08:30, Monday 09 December 2019 (53768)

I wasn't specific in my log, but I did try to see how mode 12 affected 18 & 20 since it is pretty close in frequency. 12 didn't seem to ring up 18 & 20 at all for me, and with the gain of 12 off I still was unable to get any damping out of 18 & 20 through their filter banks.

The gain for mode 12 yesterday was set to 8, and this seemed to working the best. Anything lower and I saw a slow increase in that mode.

Observing at 1820UTC but with High Violins

I may have found a setting that is very slowly damping ETMY mode 18 (1000.295Hz), so I brought us back to Observing for now. These modes are still high though and I can still see them on the glitch gram, so I'm tagging DetChar to give them a heads up.

A few SDFs:

  • ISIITMY ISO TRAMPS - These are changed by guardian so I unmonitored them.
  • SUSETMY - I unmonitored the phase FMs

    Wind: 4mph Gusts, 2mph 5min avg
    Primary useism: 0.02 μm/s
    Secondary useism: 0.32 μm/s
QUICK SUMMARY: 65 hour lock, but we are currently out of observing because ETMY violin modes 1000.30 & 1000.31Hz are rung up quite high. Since these are right next to each other, damping is proving to be difficult. The bandpass filters for each of them are broad, about 0.1hz, so it covers both of the modes for each filter bank. For right now I'll just try to find a phase and gain combo that may work before trying to change any filters.

I will stay out of Observing for the time being because the violins are clearly seen in the DARM BLRMS, glitch grams, and our range. If I get their log RMS values close to 5 I'll most likely go back into Observing.

ETMy MODE 18 (1000.30Hz) Rung Up

Around 14:55 notice H1 range took a step down at 13:37.

Only obvious change was increase in 500-2000Hz bands via the BLRMS of DARM.  This lead me to look at violin modes and sure enough we had a big line on DARM spectra around 1kHz.  Looking at the Violin Mode medm Screen & DTT, it pointed toward:

ETMy's MODE 18 (as well as a rung up MODE 20).

Unfortunately, I could not find newer instructions for damping violin modes (I could have sworn Rahul had something new because I remember Ed going through a procedure where he manipulated the VIOLIN_DAMPING guardian node.  The only Violin mode instructions I could find were the old ones Nutsinee wrote up.)  So after searching old alogs & through wikis for a few minutes, I then decided to take action:

Have remained locked and in observing. I believe I have damped ETMY violin mode 20 by setting its damping filter gain to 1. I did not have to go out of observing to do so. This gain must not be set to 0 by guardian.
