State of H1: Relocking
Intent Bit: Locking
Weather:  Skies are mostly cloudy, with patches of freezing fog. The winds are Light Air. Temperatures are currently in the mid 20s with forecast lows around 20. When I came in the roads were damp with some spotty ice patches, but for the most part clear.
Primary 0.03 – 0.1Hz: 0.03um/s
Secondary 0.1 – 0.3Hz: 0.6um/s
Outgoing Operator: Patrick
Quick Summary: Patrick has been trying to relock the IFO after the earthquake in Japan. He has been having lockloss trouble at different stages of relocking. Secondary microseism is high which may be contributing to the relocking problems.

Ops Eve Shift Summary
TITLE: 12/02 Eve Shift: 00:00-08:00 UTC (16:00-00:00 PST), all times posted in UTC
STATE of H1: Lock Acquisition
INCOMING OPERATOR: Jeff
SHIFT SUMMARY: Lockloss might be from an earthquake in Japan. Still struggling to relock. After two lock losses in the CARM reduction states, moved to initial alignment. Could not get SRY to acquire in initial alignment and gave up on it to try relocking again. I moved the SEI_CONF state from USEISM to WINDY because the green arms were more stable in WINDY, but have now set it back to USEISM.

violin mode ndscopes modified to track damping

I've been damping violin modes, and the ndscopes for each mode on an optic are very helpful, and since I need to watch more than one mode.  I've updated the ndscope files for:

  1. ITMX mode 13, first attachment, I added the gain to the top plot, which also has the output
  2. ITMX mode 17, second attachment, I added the gain to the top plot, which also has the output
  3. ETMY mode 12, third attachent, I added the gain to the top plot, which also has the output, and I added a third plot, which has ETMY modes 18 and 20.
    • my observation about mode 18  is that it suffers little to no ill efects by damping mode12
    • my observation about mode 20  is that rings up as mode12 is damped, however, the increase in RMS is slow, and typically small

  • Snow Flurries beginning to Appear on Cameras 12:15UTC (4:15 PST)
edmond.merilh@LIGO.ORG - 05:03, Sunday 01 December 2019 (53602)

As a matter of discovery:

  • I noticed that the request of 2W yielded a number of 2.8W in the rotation stage MEDM screen
  • @ DOWN,  I requested 1W and the rotation read.9W- It seemed to be an ~ 1W correction from the previous 2W request
    • Also, there would be no IMC lock at .9W (rotation stage)
  • @ re-request of 2W rotation returned to a nominal value of 1.9W
    • This seemed more normal to me
thomas.shaffer@LIGO.ORG - 12:16, Monday 02 December 2019 (53623)GRD, OpsInfo, PSL

A note on the 2.8W and searching for home:

The LASER_PWR node was complaining because it had to bootstrap the power too much (requesting 2.7W to get 2W => ~35% difference). Searching for home was the correct move here, and we haven't done this in quite some time. After searching for home via the medm, not the Guardian node, the node became confused. Requesting a different power and then back to 2W, as Ed did, is one way to solve this. The other to use the Search_For_Home state in LASER_PWR to aliviate some of the confusion.

Perhaps we should set up a consistent schedule to search for home on the rotation stage.

08:57 Y-ARM LOCKED in GREEN

So:

  • 08:37 set SEI_CONF to USEISM_WINDY (wind was just above 10mph and uSei is still on the rise
    • this got me a littl more stability for TEM00 flash alignment
  • 08:47 set SEI_CONF to USEISM
    • got much better stability and was able to get 00 flashes and mini locks within WFS thresholds
  • ETMY:
    • PIT - 157.8 → 158.2
    • YAW - -136.9 → -136.7
  • TMSY
    • PIT - 102.9 → 102.8
    • YAW -266.1 →  -265

09:03 Lockloss @ ACQUIRE_DRMI_1F

Y arm still having trouble. It's locking on TEM00 but at a lower power now. Moving to Initial Alignment
