Shift Summary: IFO has been locked for the past 30 hours, with 12.75 house in Observing. Over all conditions have been favorable for observing. The wind has remained under 20mph for the shift. Primary microseism has come down nicely after the mag 6.8 earthquake in New Caledonia (rode through with SEI_CONF in EARTHQUAKE mode). The secondary microseism has been rising for the past 9 hours, up to 0.1um/s, due to the low pressure system moving in from the Pacific. This system may bring rain and more winds Sunday morning.
   Had the Mid-Columbia Ballet on site to provide gravitational wave inspired dance to the large number of visitors who toured the site.

Shift Summary: Relocked the IFO after earthquake in the Solomon Islands rang down and the commissioners made a few tweaks. Sitting at NLN while Keita & Georgia are doing some commissioning.   
 
While looking for the cause of low range (high 90s low 100sMpc) found an error condition with the SQZ SHG reporting Conversion Efficiency Low. Per Keita’s instructions, called Sheila. She checked a few things and then had me drop out of Observing while I went to the Squeezer table. Under her direction adjusted the Squeezer laser current and temperature. Went back into Observing while letting things stabilize. Spoke with Sheila again, given the range was not too bad (wind and microseism have dropped) and that LLO and Virgo were up as well, decided not to make further adjustments at this time. While the problem is not fixed, but appears to be causing no additional trouble, at this time.    
 
Spent the remainder of the shift in Observing mode. Currently the range is 108.5Mpc. The wind has dropped to a Fresh Breeze and the microseism is down as well.

squeezer laser mode hopping

I used the new remote desktop tonight for the first time, it's really great.  I was able to watch the squeezer channels while Jeff adjusted the current on the floor, the latency is low enough that I could see exactly what was going on. Thank you CDS!

Keita and Jeff got in touch because there are some errors with the squeezer.  The SHG power stabilization was railed, which is actually happening a lot.  This is something that we need to make more reliable somehow, but it doesn't really have much of an impact on the sensitivity so it is OK to just keep observing like this.  

The reason that this servo keeps railing is that the squeezer was unimpressed by my efforts to reduce backscatter on Tuesday 49237 and the mode hopping is getting pretty bad.  The attached screenshot shows that we have temporarily fixed this several times over the last few months by adjusting the laser current, but after a few weeks the mode hopping comes back.  Tonight Jeff and I took H1 out of observing for a few minutes, turned off the squeezer by requesting SQUEEZER_READY_IFO from the SQZ_MANAGER guardian, and while I watched the laser diode current and the slow temperature feedback from the FSS (H1:SQZ-LASER_HEAD_CRYSTALFREQUENCY) Jeff adjusted the laser current knob.  As he lowered the current, the temperature control signal became more negative.  To avoid hitting the rail, he made small adjustments to the temperature knob on the laser controller while I watched the control signal come back to zero.  

I think that we probably didn't make a large enough change to the current, we started with the set current at 2.107A, now it is around 1.98 A.  We decided to go back to observing and wait a half hour to see if he green power becomes any more stable; it did not.  We might need to go as low as 1.9 A this way before we see a real improvement. By the time we had waited a half hour, we were back in triple coincidence and decided not to drop out to try to fix this now.  

It might be that the long term solution to this problem is to swap the squeezer laser soon, probably once both Daniel and I are back on site.  In the meantime there are probably 3 options:1)  leave it alone as long as the squeezer keeps locking, 2) step the laser current down to about 1.9A, while trying to step the temperature up to keep the beatnote as Jeff and I did tonight 3) make a full search for a mode hop free region as described in 48537

Squeezer Conversion Efficiency Low
   The range has been a bit low since relock. Thought it might be due to high winds and series of EQs during the shift. In checking the Squeezer, found Squeezer SHG Conversion Efficiency Low status. Posted screen shots of the various related MEMD screens.

Looks like the sqz laser has gone fully multi mode (again). The SHG green power is about 40% too low, which in turn reduces the non-linear gain in the OPO and changes the squeezer phase. I would expect squeezing injection to be somewhat ineffective in this state.

Agreed Daniel, this laser behavior is worse than ever.  I set the half wave plate to roughly maximize the green into the fiber, which is about 20mW now, so the power into the OPO is similar to how it has been, just fluctuating a lot.
