Mid Shift Status

H1 has been locked for 2.7hrs with range above 105Mpc.  DIAG_MAIN continues to say ETMy Mode 11 is high (but it looks fine).  Getting DARM glitches every 20-30min (one triggered a "DCPD" Verbal Alarm).

Weatherwise, useism holding just under 90th percentile.  EY has sustained winds just under 20mph.

Morning Status

TITLE: 04/14 Day Shift: 15:00-23:00 UTC (08:00-16:00 PST), all times posted in UTC
STATE of H1: Lock Acquisition
OUTGOING OPERATOR: Cheryl
CURRENT ENVIRONMENT:
    Wind: 7mph Gusts, 6mph 5min avg
    Primary useism: 0.03 μm/s
    Secondary useism: 0.37 μm/s

Low winds outside and useism about the same as it was yesterday morning (just under 90th percentile).
QUICK SUMMARY:

H1 had just dropped out before I walked in this morning.  Cheryl noted there was an HSTS Verbal Alarm.  ISC_LOCK was in READY state.  Moved on with locking, but ALSy was not happy, so tweaked on ETMy & TMSy w/ arm unlocked to go from 0.3 up to about 0.9.  After X & Y were locked with WFS, I tweaked up TMS for X &Y to take arms from about 1.0 to 1.1.  Then moving on now.

LLO is approaching 20hrs of nasty weather, and Virgo continues to hum along at 50Mpc.

First attempt of locking:

  • Locked PRMI and mainly adjusted PRM to optimize.
  • Lockloss at PREP_ASC_FOR_FULL_IFO.
  • During next lock, went to lock all the way through, but halfway through noticed EQ approach (Japan 5.6 magnitude).
  • transitioned to EARTHQUAKE state...eventhough we do have high useism.  Will stay in this state until the R-wave passes.  (because we just dropped out at DHARD WFS.
corey.gray@LIGO.ORG - 10:01, Sunday 14 April 2019 (48479)

Updates:

  • Transitioned back to WINDY (because EARTHQUAKE state moved ALSy too much).  After 1-2 failed attempts made it through to NLN.
  • At NLN, have DIAG_MAIN notification for ETMY MODE 11, ringing up, but it is small and coming down (RMS value under 1, but Guardian does seem to come on every few minutes to put a gain ON for this path).
    • The noisy culprit is ETMy Modes 1 & 6 (they were in the "yellow" on the SUS VIOLIN medm).  Cheryl mentioned she and TJ had been addressing this over the weekend.
    • Worked on MODE1 a little and able to decrease it's RMS value from near 5 (it is now down below 4 and continues a downward slope.
  • 16:46 (9:46am) After violin mode tweaks have taken H1 to OBSERVING.
  • Winds have picked up a little (hovering just under 20mph).

Lock Loss 0505

Every seismic trend FOM shows something happening in the y axis at the time of the lock loss. I will post plots soon.

Looks like what I saw was maybe just the wind picking back up at EY?

Damping Violins at DC READOUT

After a handful of lock losses just before and just after the CARM reduction, I made to DC READOUT but the violins are higher than I am comfortable moving on with. I will damp these down and then move on.

The struggle to relock seems to be due to higher wind (15-35mph) and higher useism (~0.4um/s)

Observing at 0240 UTC

ETMY modes 1 & 6 are still on the higher side. They are right next to each other (510.715 & 510.726Hz) and are being very stubborn but slowly on their way down now.

ALS Polarization Changes This Morning

Just wanted to show a plot of what happened when I remotely adjusted the polarization.  The thing which surprises me every time is how the polarization values take a jump  (ALSy went from 35 up to 170%!) when I turned ON the AC power (or it could have been from hitting the RESTORE button).

Luckily it was fairly easy to minimize ALSy though...able to get it to under 1%.  I powered off the system and then moved on.  However, DIAG_MAIN caught my eye and I noticed now ALS X had high polarization (around 25%).  So I quickly took H1 down & repeated the process again to minimize ALSx (I could only get down to 17% though.)  After this, returned to locking H1 with no issues.

Update: Lockloss at 16:39utc (9:39amPDT) & ALS Polarizations high for Y (& then X!)

Did not see anything obvious on signals.  And can't make out anything obvious from a glance at the Online Lockloss.

During the last lock, DIAG_MAIN said polarization for ALSy was high (it was hovering around 30 and up to 41), so I went to READY state on ISC_LOCK and did a remote adjustment of the polarization.  It's a bit scary because when restoring, polarization went all the way up to 170%!  But able to bring it down fairly easily (first with stepsize of 5).  One thing I neglected to check was ALSx, because when I was done with ALSy, ALSx was now high!  I was able to bring it down only to 17.

For locking, had one lockloss around the DRMI_TO_POP step.  2nd attempt had a short DRMI lock of seconds...currently waiting for PRMI.  May try an Initial Alignment if no luck in the next few mintues.

NOTE:  Just locked PRMI.  Used BS mainly to adjust mostly PITCH and a little Yaw.  Moving back on to locking!

NOTES:

1) Online Lockloss Tool & PEM channels?:  Are there any PEM (i.e. seismic) channels that it looks at?  SEISMON noted some EQs (but they didn't show up on the nuc5).

2) NDScope & Trend data:  For the ALSy Polarization, I wanted to get a trend of the last couple of days, but it would only go about 1-day back.  Is this normal?  I went ahead and used Dataviewer to get the trends.

thomas.shaffer@LIGO.ORG - 19:44, Saturday 13 April 2019 (48471)

I don't seem to have a problem using ndscope to trend ALSY polarization. Not sure what was going on...
