Locklosses from NLN this week
Week filled with earthquakes and 6 unknown locklosses.
We've had rung up violins after every lockloss/acquisition so are spending ~1 hour in OMC_WHITENING state, investigations ongoing in 71129, 71063, 71342.

Locklosses from NLN 07/09 to 07/16:

Total 14: 6 unknown, 4 earthquake, 2 user error, 1 hardware issue, 1 expected (Tues Maintenance).

Sun OWL Ops Summary

TITLE: 07/16 Owl Shift: 07:00-15:00 UTC (00:00-08:00 PST), all times posted in UTC
STATE of H1: Earthquake
SHIFT SUMMARY:

Shift started with a whopper Alaskan earthquake and it took 5.5hrs to get back to OBSERVING.  (...but sadly, H1 had a lockloss 10min later!).  There was a Tsunami Warning triggered (albeit retracted/downgraded shortly afterward).

The above lockloss was a bit of mystery (Lockloss file is noted as a "FAIL", but it also lists a "Board Saturation"

Kind of forced to run an Initial Alignment because ISC LOCK quickly makes the call of whether to give PRMI a chance or not.  (but in hindsight, did get H1 to Observing after an Initial Alignment)

This last/current lock looks a handful of Megaparsecs higher with a few points above 140Mpc (see attached).  Perhaps due to the alignment?

Lockloss at 1240utc.

There were no environmental issues and all the ISC FOMs looked fine. :-/

Owl Mid-Shift Update

Much of the first half of the shift involved waiting for the earth to stop ringing due to the Alaska earthquake

Did my darnedest to avoid an Initial Alignment, but ISC_LOCK pretty much forced me to.  INITIAL ALIGNMENT successful for every step except for SRC ALIGN (I later aligned SR2 & SRM by hand, but SRC ALIGN was still NOT HAPPY & FAILED, so I skipped it and ended the INITIAL ALIGNMENT.).

[SEI_ENV finally went to calm at 1050utc (350amPT)---almost 4hrs later!]

After Alignnment, DRMI locked immediately when prompted!  Now continuing through ISC LOCK.

OK, H1 made it all the way up to OMC Whitening without any issues.  Now just waiting for violins.  I've taken all of the non-nominal modes to their nominal gains.  The wait continues....and now I go make lunch.

corey.gray@LIGO.ORG - 05:35, Sunday 16 July 2023 (71370)

After 5.5hrs, H1 is back to OBSERVING post big AK EQ.

(Violins damped down in about 40min....I thought they were taking longer---I could have taken us back to Observing 6min sooner, but I was finishing making lunch. (L1 is powering up now)

STATE of H1: Earthquake
CURRENT ENVIRONMENT:
    SEI_ENV state: LARGE_EQ
    Wind: 6mph Gusts, 5mph 5min avg
    Primary useism: 20.46 μm/s
    Secondary useism: 4.52 μm/s
QUICK SUMMARY:

As soon as I entered the Control Room, I saw Ryan C. smiling at me, and then noticed LSC signals getting big on the PRMI_sb FOM for a couple of seconds and then BOOM!  7.4M Alaska earthquake!  Definitely bigger than the 6.3 Chiapas earthquake Fri morning (w/ only one ISI tripping)---we have a whopping 6 ISI Watchdogs tripped and the Seismic FOMs definitely look much bigger than the Fri EQ, with BOTH eq-bands going off-scale!  ....I'm going to put my timer on for an hour before even attempting locking!  H1 Observatory Mode is obviously in EARTHQUAKE state.

Oh and it's a balmy 81degF out.

Tsunami Warnings have been sent.  Here's the first one for Alaska (link); looks like no threat issued away for Hawaii and south Pacific.

corey.gray@LIGO.ORG - 01:21, Sunday 16 July 2023 (71366)SEI

Almost 90min post-EQ.  ISIs are all back to nominal.  Have been trying Green arms, but they only stay locked for a few seconds before ground motion breaks their lock.  Taking ISC LOCK to DOWN for another 30min.

SEI_ENV was at BIG EARTHQUAKE state from 0654 - 0813, and then have been in EARTHQUAKE state.

NOTE:  SEI Peakmon is down to about an avg of about 6000 (from 100,000!), but think it needs to be atleast down 2000 or lower to even attempt locking.  We Wait.

corey.gray@LIGO.ORG - 02:34, Sunday 16 July 2023 (71367)

Just over 2.5hrs since the earthquake and green arms are finally locking (sort of).  X&Y have both been able to offload.  (Y-arm still seems to be moving a bit.)
Made it past CHECK IR once, but have had a handful of locklosses not making it much past this point.

Peakmon is now hovering around 1000 counts.  SEI_ENV is still at EARTHQUAKE state.

Will slowly continue attempting relocking.

Calibration measurement

I took us to comissioning and to NLN_CAL_MEAS for a calibration measurement as requested by Louis. I ran the command: "pydarm measure --run-headless bb sens pcal", I started the measurement at gpstime 1373514290, at finished at 1373516180 a bit longer than I was expecting. The calibration monitor from before I started.

SHIFT SUMMARY:

I went out of Observing at 03:44 to take a broadband measurement (alog 71361) after seeing LLO was down and checking in with their control room via TS. I after it was done I put everything back and brought us back to Observing at 04:20UTC. I accidentally took a longer measurement than I intended to, I had extra unneeded arguments (sens pcal).

Looking into IMC_LOCK "Diffracted power jumped too much, toggling secondloop" message. In this 07/15 20:02UTC lock the CLOSE_ISS state worked on it's fourth attempt, see attached.

Since then it has worked on the first (07/16 11:41UTC) and second (07/16 13:50UTC) attempts. Before this it worked on the first (07/14 23:21UTC) (07/14 17:15UTC), second (07/14 12:25UTC) and fifth (07/13 09:14UTC) attempts.

Maybe this is expected but should be looked into, may be related to low ISS diffracted power issue Jason will fix this week (71322).

Longitudinal OMC Shaking during Lock Acquisition

Eleonora, Camilla

We repeated Eleonora's 68910 OFI shaking with longitudinal OMC shaking 20:14UTC-21:01UTC while we were waiting in OMC_WHITENING for the violins to damp. This means we were not in our full nominal low noise configuration.

Injected a 0.65Hz (Rahul's TF's in 69726) sine wave into H1:SUS-OMC_M1_TEST_L_EXC using 'awggui' command. Gain 3000. This could be seen as +/- 6um on DAMP_L_INMON, with some cross-coupling in other degrees of freedom, see attached.

This was more data than the 10 minutes Eleonora asked for but I had the time while the violins were damping. She would like this repeated for OPO and FC but I wasn't sure how the FC and IFO SQZ ASC's would react so will need to speak with Naoki first.

Eleonora suggests repeating with P and Y and at 2.6Hz to look for coupling. Attached is a plot showing DAMP_{L,T,V}_INMONs with offsets to bring them to zero. 6.7urad in L gives you 0.27urad in T so ~4% coupling.

Lockloss @ 19:06UTC

1373483210 After 18h29 in NLN. No obvious reason why.

Lost lock just after candidate S230715bw.
There was no verbal alarm for this event and I did not get a notification email via h1 cds lockloss alert, but Robert may have. Tagging CDS.

Back to NLN and Observing at 21:08UTC.

I accepted Daniel's 71355 updates to the TCS SIM in sdf.
Spent ~ 1hour in OMC_WHITENING damping violins. During this time I did some OMC shaking for Eleonora 71354.
