Shift Summary: Lockloss at 06:03 (22:02) – Probably due to high winds (in the high 20s to mid 30s with gusts over 40mph) and increasing microseism (centered at 0.8um/s with high at plus 1.0um/s). Attempting to relock. 

The wind has dropped a bit, but microseism is increasing. Switched the ETM-X Y and ETM-Y X dof from Quite90 to 45mHz to see if this will help with locking. ETM ISI CPSs are not rung up.  

Relocking seldom making it past LOCKING_ALS and ETM-X ISI CPS starting to ring up. Put the IFO into a DOWN state and reset the ETM X & Y blends back to original settings. ETM-X ISI CPS has settled back down to a normal state. When wind and microseism calm down will work on relocking.

Added BP filters to the violin RMS monitor

I added BP filters to:

The filters have been switched on and will be used in monitoring the violin mode second harmonics. I accepted all the changes in OAF SDF.

The space in ETMX violin RMS monitor has run out. If some of the filters are yours and you aren't currently using it please let me know if you could spare one so I can at least make a broad band filter for the ETMX second harmonics.

   The wind has come back up and microseism has risen to be centered at 1.0um/s. Could rarely move past LOCKING_ALS and never past DRMI_1F. The ETM-X ST1 CPS had also started to ring up. 

   Put the IFO into DOWN to wait for conditions to improve. I returned the ETM-X and ETM-Y blends back to Jim's Odd Blends, and the ETM-X ST1 CPS quickly returned to a quite state. Will leave these set as they are.

Ops Evening Mid-Shift
   IFO has been in Observing for the past 7.5 hours. Range is around 75Mpc. 

   Environmental conditions have been generally deteriorating for the first half of the shift. Seismic is running between 0.1 and 0.2 um/s, microseism is centered around 0.6, with peaks of +1.0 um/s. Wind is up between 10 - 25mph, with several gusts over 30mph. 

   There have been 4 ETM-Y saturations. The ETMs ISI CPS are normal.

Time Varying Calibration Parameters- Updates

Calibration parameter updates that includes data until Nov 11.

Kappa_tst is slowly trending up after the bias sign flip on Oct 16  and rest of the paremeters show normal variations that we have seen in the past.

The first plot contains all the parameters that we calculate. 

The second plot highlights kappa_tst, kappa_C and cavity pole of which the kappa_tst and kappa_C will be applied to h(t).

This data is filtered for locked state using GDS state vector and thus contains some outliers at times when the IFO is locked but not in anlaysis ready state. In  future, we plan to use GDS state vector which will give us the flexibility to only use analysis ready data.

Attached plot includes calibration parameters from Nov 12- Nov 30. This time the data has been filtered using GDS state vector and includes the data that has first four bit of GDS vector as 1. Detailed definition of the GDS state vector can be found here.

Summary of PCAL hardware injection tests on 11/12

We scheduled coherent hardware injections using the updated tinj that uses PINJX_TRANSIENT_EXC to inject signals. Previous aLog H1 entries are aLog 23346 and aLog 23352.

There was one injection performed at H1 and L1. The end time of the injection is 1131397646.4185 and the gracedb event is: H200134 (has links to waveform file and parameters)

For this successful injection the intent bit at LLO turned off when awgstream was envoked but at LHO the intent bit remained on. Adam updated DIAG_EXC to exclude l1calex from knocking the interferometer out of observing mode if there is an excitation.

Two other injections were canceled because of this problem.  The canceled injections used the same waveform and had end times of:
1131398726.42
1131399806.42

After DIAG_EXC was updated Adam and I tried another injection. The end time was: 1131405166.42

We cancelled the injection because we had a gracedb alert. awgstream had already been called when we were alerted. So the last injection at 1131405166.42 was cancelled by stopping run_tinj with the monit web interface and then killing the awgstream process that was running under the hinj account. I restarted run_tinj after the awgstream process was killed.

State of H1: 00:00 (16:00), IFO locked at NOMINAL_LOW_NOISE, 22.2w, 75Mpc.

Quick Summary:  IFO has been in Observing mode for 4 hours. Seismic activity is hovering around 0.1 um/s. Microseism is centered around 0.45 um/s, with a slight upward slope over the last 2 hours. Wind is a gentle to fresh breeze (8 – 24 mph). There is a strong storm system moving in from the northern Pacific, so weather conditions are predicted to deteriorate during the evening.

Zoomed-in noise budget from 2015-10-24

GWINC quantum noise curve is replaced with dynamically-generated shot noise curve. Radiation pressure will be included later.

The null stream spectrum shows 8×10−8 mA/rtHz shot noise, which seems to imply 17 mA of dc photocurrent on the sum, rather than the expected 20 mA.

The attachment shows two simple power-law curves (1/f2 and 1/f2.5) superimposed by eye on the residual. At first glance it is not clear which fits better.

In the case of 1/f2, we are looking for something that makes a white force noise on the bottom stage of a suspension (e.g., white electronics noise).

In the case of 1/f2.5, we are potentially looking at something less mundane; e.g., a force noise that goes like 1/f0.5, or potentially elevated structural loss on some suspension.

When awgstream was invoked LLO intent bit turned off. LHO intent bit remained on.

We think LLO may have turned off the intent bit because CALEX was not on the exclude list, ie. intent mode should ignore excitations in CALCS or CALEX.

TJ checked that and CALEX was on the exclude list for LHO.

The injection scheduled for 1131397639 did go through at each detector.

We removed the last two injections from the schedule because of this issue though.

Also Shivraj was with Adam and observed that a high frequency calibration line is on in PCALX. This decreases the range we can inject signals. We should consider if we need to turn this line off during hardware injections.

Testing is now complete.

Observing

Observing at 79Mpc.

Winds began to pick up a bit during alignment, but has since dropped back down to 20mph or below. Jim W wanted to change the blends for the end stations in the direction of the winds to the Quite_90s. So we did and seems to have worked well so far.

We have changed the blends for ETMX Y and ETMY X to the Quite_90 from the 45mHz.

We are hoping that this addresses the 40mhz ring up that ETMX sees when winds are moderate (~20-30 mph) and useism is higher (.5 micron or more)  and we have to used 45mhz blends in the beam direction (i.e. X for ETMX, Y for ETMY). So far we have only tried this on the end stations, we may want to do this on the corner station BSC's as well, I don't know. 

I switched ETMY at 19:25 UTC, ETMX at 19:27 UTC.

Installed BT ion pump to 10" gate valve at BT port X2-8

Today we closed the 10" gate valve at BT port X2-8, vented the port-side, removed the existing hardware and coupled the new ion pump and hardware to it.  We then pumped out the new volume with the leak detector and helium leak tested the new joints.  This unit is part of the overall ETM charge mitigation efforts taking place at both sites.  A similar unit was installed at BT port Y2-8 a few months ago.  Both of these units still need to be baked-out and tested before being available for use.  We plan on doing so over the next few weeks.
