Shift Summary - Day

TITLE: 02/14 Eve Shift 00:00 – 08:00 (16:00-00:00), all times posted in UTC

STATE of H1: Observing

INCOMING OPERATOR: Patrick

SHIFT SUMMARY: Had a sudden lockloss, followed by a few re-locks that came very close to sticking (MOVE_SPOTS, then NLN for 12 seconds). Re-locking was likely worsened by the high microseism we’ve been having.

LOG:

02:38 (18:38) Sudden lockloss.

04:52 (20:52) At NLN, going into Observing. No SDF diffs

Pcal EX End Station Calibration (02/11)

[Rick, Camilla, Niko]

On Tuesday we went to EX to perform a routine end station calibration. In an effort to solve our issues with reading the Working Standard temperature sensor (which is incorrect while it is being powered by the Tx module), we instead powered the Standard with a spare power supply (calibration_setup.jpeg). We then installed a temperature sensor on the receiver side (sensor_position.jpeg), with a probe inside the receiver module enclosure (probe_placement.jpeg).

Beam spot aligment looked slightly off (beam_alignment,jpeg), we need to check against the spot position from the previous EX calibration to see if this is a new trend or not. Analysis shows a drift in the RxPD force coefficient, indicating that there may be some slight clipping occurring. We will continue to investigate this.

Analysis results have been added to the pcal svn.

Measuring LSC FF for higher DARM offset

Since we are considering changing our DARM offset (Sheila has some nice plots forthcoming), I have measured the LSC FF transfer functions that we are going to need.

I used a 13.72 X0 fringe offset to give 40mA sum on DCPDs. (Previous tests done in the last week were with 41mA of DCPD sum, but 40mA seemed like a nice round number, 2x our current 20mA sum).  I measured SRCL, MICH, and PRCL to DARM, with their current FF filters engaged and operating, so these will be iterative filters. The PRCL iterative excitation, and the FF_to_DARM excitation had to be reduced in amplitude by a factor of 2 so that I didn't saturate the DCPDs. The PRCL iterative could have been reduced a bit more.

I'll fit these iterative transfer function measurements, so that they are ready to implement when we decide to change the DARM offset.

Weekly PSL Chiller Reservoir Top-Off

FAMIS10548

Added 125mL to the crystal chiller.

Both filters looked clean and clear of debris.

There was a funnel in the crystal chiller fill area instead of the stopper when I arrived. I didn't see anything saying that this was on purpose, so I placed the stopper back in when I was done.

Did verbal miss an earthquake notification?
I think there may have been a 4.6 magnitude earthquake in Canada at 11:17:05 UTC that qualified for changing SEI_CONF to EARTH_QUAKE, but did not get announced by verbal.

Probably seismon got the report after the earthquake arrived, it was only around 1k km away. Probably would have to be almost twice that to actually get advanced warning. I don't remember all of the details but there is only a short window where there will be a verbal notification after seismon predicts the earthquake will arrive.

thomas.shaffer@LIGO.ORG - 10:39, Friday 14 February 2020 (55102)

Since this was a close earthquake, it looks like when Seismon updated, it had a negative time. Verbal will ignore negative times because it thinks the earthquake has passed.

EDIT: Jim Beat me to the answer.

AS_A_RF36 ptich and yaw during relocking attempts

H1:ASC-AS_A_RF36_Q_PIT_OFFSET and H1:ASC-AS_A_RF36_Q_YAW_OFFSET data for a series of locking attempts and successful NLN locks.

The average pitch offset is larger for the unsuccessful locking attempts vs the successful NLN locks.

This is a partial list of the 63 locking  attemps previously alogged.

Damped ETMY modes 12 and 20.  Attached plots show the past 8 hours and a zoom in on gains while damping modes 12 and 20.

  • Mode 11 was turned off by guardian, left off, tried damping with nominal gains, rung up mode 12
  • mode 12 damped with -60deg phase (matches mode 20), was able to increase mode 12 gain to 4 (mode 11 gain = 0)
    • ETMY mode 12 FM4, -60deg phase, unmonitored in SDF
  • mode 18 damped with less gain, 5 instead of 10
  • mode 20 damped with a gain of 1.7, but started at 0.1, then increased in steps of 0.1-0.3
  • modes 12, 18, and 20 damped with these settings at the same time (previously mode 18 damping had to be off to damp mode 20)
  • reduced gains on other modes that had low RMS
  • bonus, violin peaks at 1.5K reduced
  • all damping restored to nominal
